Math in Action


Do you like math? Do you like a challenge? Island Park Elementary Math Challenge a free school-wide math enrichment program for elementary students consisting of series of challenging and interesting math problems.
The program provides 15 sets of challenges throughout the school year; each set is published every other week starting in late September and ending in May. These math challenges cover problem solving strategies such as draw a picture or model, make an organized list, look for a pattern, working backward, and guess and check. Each challenge presents 10 to 18 problems ordered by level of difficulties which enables students from various grades to participate
The first challenge starts Friday, Sept. 22 and are due Sept. 28th to the blue folder in the front office near Ms. Brintnall’s desk.
How to Participate:
1.       Print out the current Math Challenge which can be found on the Island Park page (http://www.mathinaction.org/island-park-elementary.html), neatly write your name, grade and teacher at the top.
2.       Solve as many problems as you can. Be sure to pay attention to the minimum number required for your grade. Ask for help if you need it. You are encouraged to work on this with your family and friends.
3.       Submit your solutions by the due date in the Math Challenge folder in the front office. Check the Math Challenge Schedule on this page for due dates.  Shelly will collect them, record for participation only, and return with solutions attached via your teacher.
This an OPTIONAL, series of math challenge sheet that are meant to be fun. Students are encouraged to work with family and friends. Sheets will only be checked for participation, not for correctness. Have fun!
